The Ladera Music Academy opened its doors in April 2013 at 4912 W Slauson Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90056 and is already creating a buzz. Every week, the academy is adding more classes to accommodate new students.

“It’s never too early nor to late to start learning music,” said the academy’s founder Dr. Tanitra Flenaugh.

The academy offers piano, violin, drums, voice, and guitar classes for students ranging from three years old to senior citizens. Parents can also sign up for MusicTogether classes with their infants.

Dr. Flenaugh started the school because she wanted to ensure that the Ladera Heights, Inglewood, Windsor Hills & Baldwin Hills communities had access to affordable and excellent music classes.

“When it came time for my 4-year-old son to learn an instrument, I couldn’t find anything nearby. I had to drive to Redondo Beach or Santa Monica in order to find the enrichment opportunities that I wanted,” Dr. Flenaugh explained. “But now, at the Ladera Music Academy, there is a place where people of all ages can come to learn a new instrument.”

The first weekend of every month, the academy will host community music days, one for kids on Saturdays, and one for adults on Sundays.

“This gives the community a chance to meet us, have fun making music, and relieve some stress,” Dr. Flenaugh said.

THIS SUMMER, The academy will also offer instrumental music camps at two other locations, one with the Inglewood Department of Parks and Recreation at Siminski Park and the other on the corner of LaBrea and Centinela across from Ralphs Grocery Store.

Dr. Flenaugh grew up the youngest of three children in a small artistic town in Fairbanks, Alaska. She left home at the age of 18 to pursue her musical aspirations for studying clarinet and music education at UCLA. While working part-time in order to support herself and complete her master’s degree at UCLA in performance & pedagogy, she noticed the large gap in access and excellence in music education programs available to students of color.

For example, while volunteering with a group of UCLA students to teach music once a week at Compton schools, Dr. Flenaugh discovered that their lessons were the students only access to music education, so she set out to change that. In 2011, she began an intensive, after-school orchestral program at both Bennett-Kew and Beluah Payne Elementary schools in Inglewood, CA and looks forward to expanding to additional schools in the coming school year.

“Underrepresented students of color, and low-income students are the most negatively impacted subgroups in education, and they have seen the largest decline in access to music education,” Dr. Flenaugh said.

Dr. Flenaugh’s passion for improving students of color’s access to music education inspired her doctorate studies, where she examined how organizations can better provide access and excellence in music education to underserved students in Southern California.

“Opening Ladera Music Academy is a step in the right direction,” said Dr. Flenaugh, who earned her doctorate degree in December 2012.

Dubai, UAE, May 13th 2013: Pro Art Gallery, the gallery that celebrates innovative art and collectibles, announced that it is hosting a “Contemporary Turkish Art Exhibition’’,at the Pro Art Gallery located at Palm Strip Shopping Mall on Jumeirah Beach Road, Jumeirah 1. The exhibition, which will open at 7 pm on May 15th 2013, will showcase over 30 selected artworks of both upcoming as well as well acclaimed Turkish artists such as Devrim Erbil, Arzu Akgun, Demir Kardas and Murat Germen

“Contemporary Turkish Art Exhibition ‘will take place between May 15 – 1 June 2013,will provide visitors with a glimpse at a different era of Turkish contemporary art, aims at promoting artists from Turkey as well as creating a market for Turkish contemporary art in U.A.E.

Turkish art developed simultaneously with the larger art world, embracing movements like Pop Art, Photorealism, Minimalism, and Conceptual Art. By the end of the twentieth century, Turkish artists were more active, exploring new visual paths in art.

Tatiana Faure, Owner and Founder of Pro Art Gallery, adds “The exhibition will provide visitors a chance to witness and discover the historical development in Turkish art and how its art market is not only becoming more mature and specialized, but is increasing in popularity and international recognition which is being fueled from within the country itself.”

Note to the Editors:

Biographies:

Devrim Erbil

He was enrolled in the painting department of the State Academy of Fine Arts in Istanbul where he first studied.Devrim’s unique painting style caught the attention of an international audience. He was awarded an art scholarship to study painting in Madrid and Barcelona. He later continued his academic career in Paris and London. Devrim was elected Turkey’s “Young Artist of the Year” and was awarded the prestigious title of Turkey’s State Artist. In addition to his painting career, Devrim also dedicated himself to the development and promotion of the arts in Turkey. Erbil also served as Director of the Istanbul Museum of Painting and Sculpture.

Demir Kardas:

He refers to his works as “Colouring”. He is an artist who avoids talking extensively about and defining his works and his process of creating art, without being lost in details. This may be the reason why he simply terms them as “colourings”. Whereas, when his art, in his own words, “his colourings” meet the viewing eye, it implies an aesthetical/visual construct far beyond colouring. In the area of art where colours, lines and planes come together, you feel the presence of an infinite universe that moves in its own rhythm based on its own specific principles. Like in all visual constructs, when the viewing eye, in other words, “the observing subject” meets the work of art, many processes, perceptions, sensations open up the door of the world of meanings beyond the visible. The meaning is located there, expecting the viewer with all its potentiality and possibilities.

Murat Germen

He is an experimental artist that often uses photography as his medium. He received a Bachelor of Science in city planning and a Master of Architecture. Germen is a photographer with a strong conceptual message. For him photography is an opportunity to find things that people ignore. He focuses on the ordinary and latent extraordinariness in regularity. He challenges himself to create extraordinary work of things that are perceived as normal. For his series Muta-Morphosis he created bizarre panoramic photographs or multidimensional cityscapes in various places around the world. The concept is the combination of the notions of mutation and metamorphosis. These images are produced by the compression of the horizontal levels.

New book by C.B. Brooks, M.D. gives life advice streamlined for the slacker set.

Summary: Trust your Radar Slackers’ Edition by Author C.B. Brooks, M.D. gives practical, real life advice in a fast, easy to read format specifically designed for teens and young adults who just can’t get through a full length book.

Raleigh, N.C. May 9, 2013 – Dr. C.B. Brooks, author of Trust Your Radar: Honest Advice for Teens and Young Adults from a Surgeon, Firefighter, Police Officer, Scuba Divemaster, Golfer, and Amateur Comedian, has now written a new book, Trust Your Radar Slackers’ Edition. It provides the same clear, sensible life lessons gathered from his many careers, served with a large dose of humor. Why? Because slackers need help too.

Target audience is age 14 to 40 and concerned parents. The idea is to develop better “brain radars,” load accurate information on topics like personal safety, evaluating people, health, driving, managing finances, and choosing an occupation. A completely unique section gives clear game plans to deal with the brain “radar jammers” that upend lives. Jammers like: alcohol, drugs, addiction, peer pressure, anger, brain disorders. As well as more subtle and socially acceptable ones that interfere with our decision making: competition, love and marriage, religion, fast food, showing off, performance enhancing drugs, sleep deprivation, among many others.

Customized for the less than motivated, the book features big print, short chapters, and lots of space – all things slackers enjoy. Trust Your Radar Slackers’ Edition was published by Derby Press and is available in paperback from Amazon and multiple ebook formats such as Kindle, iTunes, Nook, Kobo and other platforms.

“Like cliff notes for life.”

Fluxus Foundation is pleased to announce an exhibition at 454 West 19th St. George Maciunas, founder of Fluxus, was an exemplary processor of knowledge. The copyright documents featured in this exhibition are a testament to his scrupulousness. After establishing the Fluxus Headquarters in NY, Maciunas sought protection for Fluxus and its artists to safeguard the group’s interests. He painstakingly registered claims to copyright for Fluxus works starting in 1963, including pieces by Yoko Ono, George Brecht, and more.

New York, NY, May 07, 2013 — Harry Stendhal presents © Fluxus: Original Copyright Documents, 1963-1967 in the Fluxus Foundation exhibition space at 454 West 19th St.

George Maciunas, an American-Lithuanian artist best known as the founder and central coordinator of Fluxus, was an exemplary processor of knowledge. Educated in architecture, painting, art history, graphic design, and musicology, Maciunas’s oeuvre demonstrates incredible diversity. He was true polymath who worked as an artist, architect, commercial designer, and real estate entrepreneur, among many other roles. Yet, his multifaceted output is unified by a diagrammatic aesthetic—one that illustrates his analytic mind and sheer meticulousness.

The copyright documents featured in this exhibition are a testament to Maciunas’s scrupulousness. Governed by a visionary and often dictatorial temperament, Maciunas strove for a “common front and CENTRALIZATION” of Fluxus. His belief in the necessity of strong leadership in maintaining collectivity led him to establish the official Fluxus Headquarters in New York in 1962. Under this new center of operations—which was organized as a publishing venture—Maciunas proposed that “authors are to assign exclusive publication rights to Fluxus” and that they “will not submit any works to any other publication without the consent of Fluxus.”

In order to safeguard the group’s interests as a monolithic entity, Maciunas sought copyright protection for Fluxus and its artists. In the immediate years following the formation of the Fluxus Headquarters, Maciunas painstakingly registered claims to copyright with the Library of Congress for works created under the Fluxus banner. On display is a selection of original copyright registration documents for notable Fluxus works including George Brecht’s Water Yam (1964), Yoko Ono’s Four (Fluxfilm no. 16) (1966), and Albert M. Fine’s Piece For Fluxorchestra (1966). While each of these works bears the names of the original authors, the ultimate copyright claimant is always FLUXUS, solely owned by George Maciunas. These documents not only express the output of what became known as the “Flux Golden Age,” but also spur contemplation of what it means to create art within a collective identity, the rigorous control one man exerted over Fluxus, and the role of legal protection in producing creative work.

Also on display, along with its original 1965 copyright registration document, is George Maciunas’s Prefabricated Building System. Accompanied by an architectural model and animated video projection, the Fluxhouse was Maciunas’s ultimate vision for social welfare and communal living.

The exhibition is on view from May 10 through July 27, 2013.

Marshall Blonstein’s Audio Fidelity is once again heating up the SACD coffers with two amazing classic releases from the 50s.

Culver City, CA, April 24, 2013 — Marshall Blonstein’s Audio Fidelity is once again heating up the SACD coffers with two amazing classic releases from the 50s.

Nat “King” Cole’s 1958 jazz jewel Welcome to the Club and Harry Belafonte’s groundbreaking calypso release from 1956 Calypso are now available in a limited run of SACDs. What Belafonte did for calypso would change the face of music forever and make an otherwise obscure genre mainstream. In similar fashion, Nat “King” Cole became a household name and synonymous with the jazz big band sound.

Although these two talented performers were in separate worlds musically they ran parallel in regards to worldwide success. Calypso was one of the first albums to sell a million copies and two years later Welcome to the Club would solidify Cole’s place in music history with great hits like “Avalon” and “Mood Indigo.” Belafonte would find immortality with his smash hit “Day-O (The Banana Boat Song),” which is still popular today and can be heard in TV Commercials and sports stadiums everywhere.

Audio Fidelity’s precise remastering process takes advantage of all the understated distinctions of this great music and makes it more obvious to the listener. Rich tones and vibrant vocalizations come to the front of the music with clarity and brilliance thanks to the enhanced SACD sound.

Welcome to the Club and Calypso are limited edition releases that are expected to disappear quickly. Both releases are available direct from the Audio Fidelity website or etailers such as Amazon.com.

Myers Fine Art’s Sunday, April 7 auction of fine art from New York, American and European artists’ estates will commence at 12 noon Eastern Time. A preview will be held from 10-6 on Saturday, April 6, and from 10 a.m. till noon on auction day.

St. Petersburg, FL, March 26, 2013 — Nearly all artists of renown have a private reserve of paintings they display in their own homes but never offer for public sale. Myers Fine Art’s April 7 auction features a connoisseur’s selection of artworks that qualify for this elite category. Almost every painting, sculpture or work on paper was obtained directly from a noted artist’s estate or from the recipient to whom the artwork was gifted or bequeathed. A sizable portion of the fresh-to-market auction trove comes from the estates of New York artists, with the remainder representing private holdings from now-deceased American and European painters. While all schools converge in this sale, with a dateline from the early 17th through early 20th centuries, the selection is “predominantly modern,” said Myers co-owner Mary Dowd.

The largest grouping from a single artist is the collection of 15 works by 1960s abstract minimalist Leon Polk Smith (Native American, 1906-1996). Influenced by Piet Mondrian, Smith’s highly original style is associated with the hard-edge school, of which he is considered a founder. Smith spent most of his life in New York City, with the only breaks being a two-year tenure at Rollins College in Florida and a brief period of residence in Cuba. His influence and importance are validated by the many museums whose permanent collections include his paintings, such as the Whitney, the National Gallery of Art, and the Guggenheim, where Smith received a coveted fellowship.

Among the Leon Polk Smith paintings in the April 7 sale is a signed 1970 acrylic on shaped canvas painting from Smith’s acclaimed Constellation series. Measuring 19 inches square, it is estimated at $4,000-$6,000. Also, a 31½in diameter oil and collage on canvas titled “Vermilion Black” is signed on verso and carries the inscription “Gift to Bob Jamieson 1956.” It is expected to make $6,000-$9,000.

The legacy of New York artists continues with three quintessential Johann Berthelsen (American, 1883-1972) oil-on-board snow scenes of Manhattan landmarks: Washington Square Park (18¾in x 22¾in sight, est. $4,000-$6,000), the Empire State Building (19 7/8in x 24in sight, est. $4,000-$6,000) and Central Park. Each of the paintings is signed and attractively framed.

Howard Gardiner Cushing’s (American, 1869-1916) signed oil-on-board “Portrait of Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney” depicts the famous New York art patron and museum founder in a fanciful Leon Bakst-designed costume. A pencil notation on the back of the 18in x 13¼in (sight) painting reads, in part, “Bought by Mrs. Delano, 131 E. 36…” It is estimated at $5,000-$7,000.

“It is interesting how the artworks acquired from completely different estates somehow came together in this sale so many years later,” Dowd said. “The ‘Mrs. Delano’ who purchased the Cushing painting was the wife of architect William Adams Delano of the firm Delano & Aldrich. After Howard Cushing died, Mrs. Whitney helped fund a gallery at the Newport Art Museum to memorialize Cushing’s work. Mrs. Whitney’s good friend, William Delano, was chosen to design the gallery.’

“We’re also auctioning some beautiful New York City architectural prints by Chester Price, who, coincidentally, worked for Delano & Aldrich for many years,” Dowd added. “And bringing it full circle, the sale also includes a collection of artists’ books, one of which is filled with colorful plates depicting some of Leon Bakst’s Ballets Russes costumes similar to the one Gertrude Whitney wore for her Cushing portrait.”

A Gustave Baumann (American, 1881-1971) woodblock print titled “Cholla and Sahuaro” vividly showcases several varieties of cacti, some of them flowering, in a Southwestern desert setting. Pencil-signed with the artist’s chop mark, the 20in x 19in (framed) work is numbered 49/125 and expected to realize $10,000-$15,000 at auction.

Distinctly the work of Balcomb Greene (American, 1904-1990), a dramatic oil-on-linen artwork depicting craggy rocks and chilly waters is titled “The Cove.” It measures 60in x 54in, is artist signed and estimated at $4,000-$6,000. A more placid water scene is William Allyn Nichols’ (American, b. 1942-) signed 53in x 78in (sight) oil on canvas titled “Japanese Foot Bridge,” which is entered in the sale with a $6,000-$8,000 estimate. Making it a marine trifecta, Emile A. Gruppe’s (American, 1896-1978) 1958 oil painting “Shelling Longboat Key” is offered with a $4,000-$6,000 estimate.

Alfonso A. Ossorio’s (American, 1916-1990) signed and dated 1952 freeform watercolor titled “Mononucleosis” measures 40in x 26¼in (sight) and could bring $3,000-$4,000 at auction. Another compelling contemporary work is the Louise Berliawsky Nevelson (American, 1899-1988) oil on canvas titled “Cats.” Signed but unframed, it measures 20in x 38in and is estimated at $2,000-$4,000.

Heading the European art section is a Joan Miro (Spanish, 1893-1983) aquatint etching “L’aigrette Rouge,” signed and numbered 15/50. Sized 64in x 46in (framed), it is estimated at $10,000-$15,000. “It is unusual to encounter a Miro from such a small edition,” Dowd noted.

Because the April 7 event is Myers’ first specialty fine art sale in more than three years, co-owners Mary Dowd and Michael Myers were both selective and inclusionary in their final choices. The auction features many excellent, fresh-to-market works by lesser-known artists in addition to elusive paintings by avidly collected, high-profile names.

Myers Fine Art’s Sunday, April 7 auction of fine art from New York, American and European artists’ estates will commence at 12 noon Eastern Time. A preview will be held from 10-6 on Saturday, April 6, and from 10 a.m. till noon on auction day. The gallery is located at 1600 4th St. North in St. Petersburg, FL 33704. All forms of bidding will be available including live via the Internet through LiveAuctioneers.com.

GEM, a twisting muddle of mystery, lies, deceit, Nazis, spies, revenge, lost love, and a skewed romance is now available worldwide in ebook and print versions.

Duluth, MN, USA — In Naida Reynolds’ (http://www.NaidaReynolds.com) breakout novel, titled Gem — Gem Forrester is an Agency courier on a secret mission to find out what happened to her twin sister, their parents, and a dear family friend, who disappeared without a trace. As Gem begins to piece together what happened one fateful night, she will have to discover what happened to Nazis who had disappeared over sixty years ago.

Gem Forrester’s life consisted of her family and her career with the Agency – until both are cast into tragedy, mystery, chaos, and pain. A chance meeting in Barcelona further complicates her life in a way she could never foresee or even imagine. Readers will be caught up in the mysteries and chaos in Gem’s life. But will question if Gem can resolve these issues without losing her sanity.

“We never know during our busy daily lives how our words, choices, or actions might affect other people with whom we come in contact,” says Reynolds, (http://www.NaidaReynolds.com). “Every ‘story’ has two or more sides, and sometimes the most seemingly insignificant moment in one person’s life can cause an unintended domino effect in other people’s lives.”

Gem has found herself in this new hellish mission where she is thrown an emotional life-line in the appearance of a fascinating, handsome man – Wyatt Grantham. While Gem pursues her private mission to find her family, Wyatt pursues her for his private agenda. Gem’s once well-organized life is now a muddle of mystery, lies, deceit, lost love, and a skewed ‘romance’.

“Naida Reynolds gives you a combination of Nazi spies, mystery, history, romance and revenge all with a little bit of humor added. This was a great read and highly recommended. This book kept moving and the interaction between the characters was superbly developed. A true page turner,” says reviewer James Summer.

The ebook version of Gem ISBN 9781622872619, published by First Edition Design Publishing http://www.firsteditiondesignpublishing.com, is available online wherever ebooks are sold. The 768 page print book version, ISBN 9781622872626, was published by First Edition Design Publishing and distributed worldwide to online booksellers.

Fantasy author Pratibha R DH believes that she has had this connection with the fairies right from the tender age of seven. The fairies in her world loved telling her stories about the fairy cosmos and their acquaintances – the dragons, unicorns, witches and the wizards. Her parents and siblings refused to believe her, so she promised the fairies that she would publish their stories one day and the world would know about them.

In course of time, to get respite from the endless goading from her parents and her teachers about how she must stop day dreaming, she enclosed all her stories in a sealed file. And then studied with a vengeance to pursue a master’s degree in Economics, a diploma in Computer Networking coupled with certifications from Cisco and Microsoft (MCSE, CCNA). Life became busy what with her job as a Content Specialist, when the bond with the fairies was revived again and she was reminded of her promise. From then onwards, her life was one balancing act with the major part of her work in the day consisting of content writing for websites, SEO copywriting, article writing, blogging and web designing, whereas by night she recommenced her childhood promise of writing about the fairy realm.

Some say that her novel “Magical Ventures of Loli and Lenny,” is roughly inspired by the real life accounts of the fairies. Rumour also has it that except for her two little boys, no one from her kin knows about this secret pact with the fairies. Not even her husband!
